What is Enterprise 2.0?

Last week we talked about accountability and in our last post on technology the concept of “Enterprise 2.0″ came up. This week is actually the Enterprise 2.0 trade show in Boston and there will be a lot of technology-related announcements using this term, so I figured it was timely to talk a bit about what enterprise 2.0 actually is and how it fits with HR.

Loosely, Enterprise 2.0 is the next generation of technologies that are designed to make things easier for knowledge workers. It’s all about breaking down the issues with communications and collaboration and deriving real value from the technology. The end result is a higher level of productivity and innovation for the enterprise. Sounds good, right?

The great thing about this approach is that the focus is on creating value and making things simpler for everyone involved. That said, like any type of newer buzz-worthy technology, it is easy for people to get swept up in cool technology for the sake of technology and lose sight of what they are really trying to do.

There is a great saying - just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

The good news is that employee performance management products are definitely integrating Enterprise 2.0 functionality into the technology with simple user interfaces and features that focus on key issues such as accountability. As could be expected, there may be a tendency towards overdoing the “cool factor” of the technology, which leaves HR no closer to achieving your goals - a strategic and valuable talent management process.

In working with your IT department, be sure to figure out what you really need technology-wise and what will meet your current and future needs. Look for ways to get the best of Enterprise 2.0 without being caught up in the cool factor that doesn’t actually get the job done.
